John’s Hostel tries to offer a friendly, romantic, cozy & a bit artistic place, with a lot of possibilities for communication with other backpackers and travelers. It’s supposed to be an ideal place for those, who love to be in a cozy and private atmosphere house and don’t mind simplicity, but appreciate the laid back atmosphere of a student community. Some plants and paintings will provide a cozy jungle atmosphere of an artists private home, which is open to individual backpackers, students, world-travelers, artists, and explorers of culture, history or night-life. Alcohol is only in small amounts permitted, so round about 2 beers or 2-3 glasses of wine per person. But no smoking at all! All kind of drugs are as well strictly forbidden, people with drugs get kicked out with no refund! Johns Cozy Little Hostel is in the ground-floor of a typical Berlin historical building out of the year 1804. The house has the charm of a typical Berliner building from the Kaiser-time (1895), with ‘Stucco’ everywhere, and high ceilings of 3.5 meters. In the WW II there happened fightings in this house, footprints of this could be seen in the backyard of the house, bullet holes on the wall from the street-fightings between Russian and Germans back in 1945. *** gays and lesbians & friends are especially welcome, as well as eccentrics, buddhists, vegetarians, philosophers, magicians, artists, explorers of culture & night-life and students of German language. Drag-queens get a free beer from John or David! Berlin is a city with 150.000 gays and lesbians, who are especially welcome in our city and in our place. Those, who do not like that should stay away. People with homophobic attitudes might get canceled right away. Only the picky people which write negative comments can stay away and should go to hell or to the narrow Hilton-Hotel for 500€ per night. What John’s Cozy Little Hostel is good for and what not, just from the experience: Our hostel was always loved and appreciated by Italians art students from Bologna , gay canadian activists, laid back australians from the out-back, Israeli vegetarians relaxing from the army or from India, British from Scotland, London & Cambridge, scholars from Finland, Iranian-Americans from New York, artists from Argentina and swedish party girls, young gays & lesbians, Non-smokers, philosophers & cool girls from Chengdu in western China. It was never liked by people from Mainland-China and people who prefer perfect automatic hotels chains. But if you do so, please go to them but don’t come to us! We are old fashioned and we love it! John’s Cozy Little Hostel is Berlin’s German language student’s favorite long-term stay residence, the bed from just 300€ per month! The rooms have wooden floors and the 3.5 meter high walls are painted in in desert orange of Egypt’s deserts, combined with the nil-blue door and windows. The bath-rooms remind on the Arabian built Alhambra of Granada (Spain), some oriental elements originating from the owners’ favor for North-Africa & Asia, especially of Egypt, India & Indonesia. This hostel is designed for single travelers, who like meeting other people, while they are traveling. It’s a small place, with an atmosphere of a big family’s home or of a nice students-share-house, quite relaxed where you can feel like being at home. We are completely free of noisy groups of school-kids and we try to attract especially individual travelers with character, students, especially those of German language & culture, anthropology and arts and more. Our kitchen provides an atmosphere to meet people, this you can do as well in our nice common area with a jungle of plants and sofas for chilling out, with lots of opportunities for talks and contacts with our nice international guests or travelers from all continents. Single travelers especially welcome – as well couples and friends traveling together, but please no big groups, we wouldn’t take! Some typical reviews: ‘This hostel is perfect for young uncomplicated people.’ (Verena, 19, Austria) ‘A very small & cozy home-hostel, for non-smoking or trying to quit.’ ‘Quiet. No loud party hostel.’ ‘The place feels more like a home than a hostel. Cool living room, nice staff, clean, small and intimate.’ (Jimmy, 20, Canada) ‘It’s unique ! It’s better than home ! Less boring at least.’ (Sarah, 17, Basel, Switzerland)) ‘It felt like you were staying at a friends house! Relaxing! atmosphere.’ (Susanne, 21, Mainz, Germany) Our most beloved recent comment was: ‘It was lovely to stay at Johns. The kitchen is a cozy little hub perfect for cooking, chatting with other guests, studying German and drinking vino….. Our room was lovely with nice details, like the cute stuffed pink elephant on our lovely futon bed. The other guests also seemed to be of an interesting variety, less generic than most of the cheap hostels. We will return!’ Available: – free book swap (exchange) – common area with games like chess or monopoly – CD player for your own music, but definitely no TV – info-display with maps, information & flyers, about museums, sights & night-life, including 4 Berliner program-magazines with Berlin’s Events, clubs, exhibitions, street parties, cinemas, theaters, festivals and flea-markets: Tip, Zitty and the 2 gay magazines, Siegessäule & Blu. Berlin is a metropolis bigger than the size of London and Paris or New York, but very much affordable, cheaper than any town of western Europe, and so much more fun. So plan to stay longer, at least 3 days you will not regret it! Owner: John Blackknight, 29 years old, fan of Arabia, especially Egypt and also Asia especially Indonesia, Bali & Timor Leste, as well as India especially Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. There might be some flavor of it here. JOHN’s special interests are: Knights of the Middle ages, play-station 3 and x-box 360, Final Fantasy, adventures in Africa, Asia and Arabia. DAVID’s special interests are: anthropology, South-East Asia,India & Indonesia, movie-making, theater & film, and all sorts of adventures in Africa or Asia. Cheers John, Joerg, Nina, David & friends (John’s Cozy Little Hostel) Johns Hostel, as well named Johns Cozy Little Vegetarian Smoke &Alcohol-free Alternative Gay-Welcome Hostel Waldenser Str. 30 D-10551 Berlin-Moabit Our hostel is situated in Berlin-Mitte-Tiergarten-Moabit and is in the Center of the Center of Berlin. But not in the trendy & expensive Prenzlberg, not in the noisy party-area as Friedrichshain, and as well not in the so-called Center West or Center-East, where the expensive world-class tourism with designer-trash walks around, among Banks, Ministeries & Embassies, or Starbucks, Mc Donalds & Dunkin Donuts. Here in Moabit, founded by French Hugenotte refugees at 1685, we are in a very average Berliner, mixed residential neighbourhood, where workers & middle-class is mixed with German and Indonesian students, and a lot of arabic, turkish, vietnamese, tamil & african immigrants, some of them in the 3rd generation in Berlin. For Berlin, it is a relativ poor and relativ intellectual area. Many students from West-Germany or abroad came to this area to live here, because apartments here were still relatively cheap, at least much cheaper than those trendy or bourgeoise chicy-micky-areas of the would-be-nobel upper middle-class, as Steglitz, Wilmersdorf or Zehlendorf or even more dumb & boring areas, not to mention . Here in moabit we have the cheapest hair-dressers, the best & cheapest fruit-markets, super-cheap supermarkets, turkish bakeries with ridiculous cheap prices, as 3 pieces of cheese & berry-cake for 1 €, second-hand-clothing, korean, vietnamese, turkish & arabic food-shops, Indian, Palestinian, Afrikan, German & Thai restaurants, cheaper & better than no where in Berlin. Beside of this we are situated in between 2 of the biggest parks of Berlin, Tiergarten in the South and Rehberge in the North, a lake=Plötzensee, the river Spree, several channels and the biggerst interior harbour of Europe =Westhafen. For me, David, this is one of the best areas in Berlin, and I lived here since 1979. After visiting 57 countries, I became a patriotic Moabiter ! Near by your find : ( the walking- distance in minutes you find in brackets ) ( b, t, u = 1 min by Bus, train underground, ) Will be continued …….
